Hot Tub Maintenance Issues and Tips
Hot tubs are a great place to unwind and soak your troubles away but they also require regular maintenance to reap all of the benefits. If you don’t maintain your hot tub, the result can be costly repair bills and unhealthy water which can cause other health issues because of contaminated or unsanitized water. Following are some common spa maintenance tips you can use to get the fullest enjoyment from your spa.
Hot Tub Water Quality
The hot water in spas contains active bacteria. Bacteria multiply in the hot water to cause cloudy water conditions and health hazards to skin resulting in hot tub rash and other illness. The main enemy in the spa is out of control bacteria due to unkept water. At minimum, sanitizer always needs to be present in a sufficient amount in order to keep the multiplying bacteria under control. Although many sanitizer types are introduced to the market, the time proven choice of chlorine or bromine makes either of these two the sanitizer of choice for most bathers.
With the bacteria under control you next must control the PH level in the spa. The PH is measured on a scale of 1 to 14 with 7 being PH neutral or balanced. It measures how acidic or how basic the water is. Low PH levels means the water is acidic. High PH levels mean the water is too basic. Outside the ideal range on either end can create water problems.
Simply keeping a regular eye on the PH level with either a water test kit or simple water test strips can help you maintain the optimum PH range for spa water which is between 7.2 and 7.6. By maintaining the PH level, the sanitizer can do its work in a comfortable range and you avoid the water breaking down by becoming either too acidic or too basic. If left to wander, out of range PH can cause all sorts of water clouding, precipitation of calcium carbonate and other issues.
Once the PH and sanitizer are under control you will want to keep it that way. Periodically adding a shock treatment helps to reactivate the sanitizer after a period of time as otherwise it can get saturated and become less effective. Regularly shocking the water reactivates the chlorine or bromine and keeps your water healthier longer. Again, do not overshock as that can also cause its own problems. Generally you want to shock once a week.
It is recommended to change spa water every 3 months or so depending on frequency of use because once you get to a certain point of diminishing returns, it is better to change the water rather than conduct advanced chemistry experiments.
There are other spa accessories and additives that can address particular spa problems such as scaling or metal in the water. You can also get spa fragrances to help liven up your spa experience. They come in several different sizes and scents.
Finally, do not neglect the spa filter whose job it is to remove contaminants and particles from the water. Rinse the filter out regularly and once the pores are clogged and filter cleaner no longer does its job, simply change out the filter. Spa filters should be changed every year or year and a half depending on use.
